Welcome to the Historical 'Off Base" and "Peace Researcher" Blog

Kia ora!

Welcome to the archives of the Peace Researcher and Off Base publications.

Off Base was the newsletter of the former group, Citizens for the Demilitarisation of Harewood, edited by Bob Leonard. CDH was the ancestor of the Anti-Bases Campaign. Off Base was a standalone publication for 12 issues from 1984-87 inclusive and then became part of what was called Peace Researcher, incorporating Off Base. That arrangement lasted until 1994 and those 1987-94 issues can be read as part of the online historic Peace Researchers.

Peace Researcher is the publication of the Anti-Bases Campaign  www.converge.org.nz/abc  The publication has been in print since 1983 and continues today. And now for the first time all issues are available electronically

You will also find on this blog, a copy of the documentary Base Deception which outlines the activities at the US military base at Christchurch Airport

The best way to view the publication issues is to select the issue you would like to read.

Inside the square at the top you will see a "fullscreen" button.

Click on this.

You can then zoom in to the text using the + sign which is now at the bottom of your screen.
The word search function is great if you are trying to find something spcific.

I hope that you enjoy reading through these. They are a very valuable picture of the Anti-Bases Campaign Activities in New Zealand over the last 28 years.

If you would like to join the Anti-Bases Campaign (ABC) and receive hard copies of future publications please email Murray Horton on cafca@chch.planet.org.nz

Visit the Peace Researcher website www.converge.org.nz/abc/prbacki.html to see the Peace Researchers from 2001 onwards

It takes a lot of work to compile and write the material presented on these pages - if you value the information, please send a donation to ABC PO Box 2258 Christchurch, New Zealand to help us continue the work.

Base Deception

Base Deception”, made in 1994 by Sam Miller for the Anti-Bases Campaign, is a short (14 minutes) documentary about the US military transport base at Christchurch International Airport (Harewood). It is fronted throughout by the late Bob Leonard of ABC and features wonderful footage of the Hiroshima Day arrests of Moana Cole and Ciaron O’Reilly for trespass inside the base. Obviously, it is up to date as of 1994 but the US base is still at Christchurch Airport (as it has been since the 1950s), albeit in a reduced and changed form.
